When we talk about sustainable tourism, it's not just about saving the environment — it's also about people. Or rather, it's about those people who reside in those picturesque places.

Local communities play a huge role in  sustainable tourism. They're the ones who have the best knowledge of the land, traditions, and ecosystems. Including local community members means that tourism is culture-sensitive, environment-friendly, and benefits the people living there.

Why does it matter?

  • Because including the local community in sustainable tourism means decisions aren't just top-down — they're informed, inclusive, and authentic.
  • Because the benefits of ecotourism to local communities exceeds dollars — it brings pride, empowerment, and a chance to safeguard their heritage.
  • And because sustainability within local communities results in healthier, more resilient societies which flourish together in harmony with their environment.

Let’s not forget: real change doesn’t always start with global policies. Sometimes, it begins with a single village rethinking how it hosts travelers, or a group of locals starting an eco-tour, or a community choosing to protect its forest instead of exploiting it.

What’s one example of a local community you’ve seen doing tourism right?
